Tampa, FL (Mar. 24, 2016) -  On Thursday, March 24th, Hillel Academy students and faculty celebrated Purim in Temple Beth Am’s sanctuary.  Costumed students wore princess dresses, cowboy and cowgirl hats and outfits, superhero t-shirts including Batman and Wonder Woman, wigs of all lengths and colors and a few fairy wings thrown in, too!

The morning began with a short Tefillah service followed by the 8th graders reading the Megillah and performing an original play based on Grease - Schmaltz!!!

Set in Shushan High School, main characters included the student council president (Ahasuerus, King of Persia), the captain of the football team (Haman), the coach of the football team (Mordecai) and the new Jewish girl / Homecoming Queen (Esther).  The 8th graders, dressed in poodle skirts and white t-shirts and jeans, acted out the parts, sang songs and danced to the sound track.  Every time Hey Man’s (Haman’s) name was mentioned the sanctuary filled with the sound of groggers and booing!  All ended well when the captain of the football team was expelled and Esther was accepted by the student council president!

After a rousing round of applause and before returning to class, the whole school sang Purim songs and marched in a costume parade led by their costumed teachers.

Schmaltz was also performed on location at the Tampa JCC & Federation.  The audience included JCC members and residents of Weinberg Village.
