Tampa, FL (Mar 2, 2016) - On Saturday, February 27, 2016, more than 225 people gathered at The Ritz Ybor on 7th Avenue in Ybor City to enjoy an evening of socializing, dining and shopping at an over-sized silent auction!  Mobile bidding was used by the silent auction shoppers for the first time.  It added elements of ease and fun to the shopping and bidding.  Hillel Academy parents Carolyn Fink and Bonnie Amsterdam-Miele were the event chairs.  Both serve on the school’s Board of Trustees.

The event theme was the Roaring Twenties.  Most guests chose to dress in flapper dresses and headbands and newsboy hats, fedoras and vests although many came to the event donned in the usual cocktail attire.  The decor in the Ritz Ybor mimicked an old time speakeasy.  Tables were bedecked with black, red, silver and pearl centerpieces on black table cloths with black and white seat covers on the chairs.

This year’s honorees, Rabbi Richard Birnholz and Nat and Debbie Doliner, are not only important to the Hillel Academy family but very important people in the Jewish community.  Their recognition by Hillel brought many people to the event.

During the cocktail hour guests enjoyed passed hors d’oeuvres including baby reubens, chicken with raspberry sauce, ceviche and tuna on crackers.  A kosher buffet dinner including salad, quinoa, eggplant, potatoes, carrots, salmon and hand carved roast beef with horseradish sauce.  A dessert bar of brownies and gelato accompanied an after dinner coffee bar.

As guests dined, they were welcomed by Head of School Amy Wasser.  Honoree videos were prepared in advance of the event and shown after Amy’s remarks.  Rabbi Richard Birnholz and Nat and Debbie Doliner all spoke of their admiration and affection for Hillel Academy.  Rabbi mentioned that he taught at the school years ago.  The Doliners spoke about what the school gave their children in terms of both Jewish and secular education, and how the school benefitted their family.

Following the videos, Amy presented a beautiful octagon shaped glass award to the honorees.

Neal Honeycutt, Board President, thanked the event attendees and offered his congratulations to the honorees.
